Chapter 3: the machine plays by itself

Chapter 3: the machine plays by itself

Start this chapter

In this chapter, the machine starts playing by itself. A Clock sets the tempo, a Note Grid plays the bass, and you build drums out of modules: a kick is a very low oscillator that an envelope switches on for a brief moment.

You mix everything in a console (Stereo Mix) and add a hi-hat, triggered by a Trigger Seq. By the end, bass, kick and hi-hat loop without you touching the keyboard. The chapter picks up the instrument from chapter 1.

The exercises

  1. The bass plays by itself
By the end: Your bass plays on a loop without you touching the keyboard: the clock sets the tempo, the Note Grid plays the notes.
  2. A kick drum
By the end: A kick drum hits every beat: it’s a very low oscillator that an envelope switches on for a short moment.
  3. Mixing
By the end: Bass and kick go through the console: each one has its own volume, and both sit in the center.
  4. The hi-hat
By the end: Your beat is complete: bass, kick and hi-hat, all playing on a loop.
