Try it in the synth

One finger (or the mouse) sliding over a surface, and three things move at once: a pitch on the horizontal axis, a tone on the vertical axis, and a touch that plays the note. This is the Kaossilator idea: you do not pick notes, you move around inside a scale, and no note ever sounds out of place.

The surface is cut into equal strips, one per note of the scale: both edges are playable, and the root is a little lighter. The note name shows up next to your finger.

Controls

  • Scale, Root: the notes on the surface. With FREE, the pitch follows your finger with no steps (glissando).
  • Range: how many octaves the surface covers, from 1 to 4.
  • Glide: how long it takes to slide from one note to the next (0 to 1 s).
  • Latch: each touch flips the gate; the note keeps sounding when you lift your finger, until the next touch.

Position and pitch hold their last value when you lift your finger, so the note does not drop during the envelope release.

Outputs

  • X, Y: finger position, from 0 to 10 V. Y is perfect for a filter.
  • Gate: 10 V as long as your finger is down (or until the next touch with Latch).
  • V/Oct: the pitch, snapped to the scale, for a VCO.
