The Ring Mod multiplies two signals: yours and a carrier. A note at f Hz multiplied by a carrier at fc Hz leaves neither f nor fc, but two new frequencies: f + fc and |f − fc|. If the ratio between them is not simple, these frequencies are no longer harmonic: the sound turns metallic, bell-like, robotic.
The carrier is internal by default. If the Carrier input is patched, that signal is used instead: a ±5 V carrier multiplies the signal by ±1.
Controls
- Wave: shape of the internal carrier, SINE (the purest) or TRI (a bit richer in sidebands).
- Freq: frequency of the internal carrier, from 0.5 Hz to 5 kHz. Around 5 Hz, the signal is simply chopped (tremolo); above 20 Hz, you hear the sidebands.
- Mix: balance between the original sound and the modulated sound.
Inputs
- In L, In R: the sound to modulate (In R copies In L). The same carrier modulates both sides.
- Carrier: an external carrier (a VCO, for example), which replaces the internal one.
- Freq: CV for the internal carrier frequency, at 1 V per octave.
Outputs
- L, R: the modulated sound, in stereo.
